The Blue Ghost lander has touched down on Mare Crisium. This basalt lava plain is one of the oldest mapped features on the Moon, appearing in Thomas Harriot's 1609 map (labelled '18' in the pic below). Harriot's telescopic lunar maps pre-dated Galileo by months! 🧪🔭 #PlanetSci

The work I put into 'filling in' much of 'Luna Incognita' ended up helping me with a later painting project. Here we are looking at Earth from above the Lunar Far Side, with the 'Earth lit' portion in the distance. The Sun is behind us. Areas not lit by either light source were as yet poorly known.

The Flaming Star Nebula's vibrant red hues are due to the ionized hydrogen gas emitting light, while the blue areas result from light reflected by interstellar dust.
