The Blue Ghost lander has touched down on Mare Crisium. This basalt lava plain is one of the oldest mapped features on the Moon, appearing in Thomas Harriot's 1609 map (labelled '18' in the pic below). Harriot's telescopic lunar maps pre-dated Galileo by months! 🧪🔭 #PlanetSci

The work I put into 'filling in' much of 'Luna Incognita' ended up helping me with a later painting project. Here we are looking at Earth from above the Lunar Far Side, with the 'Earth lit' portion in the distance. The Sun is behind us. Areas not lit by either light source were as yet poorly known.
This is a kind of updated vision of an oil painting Chesley Bonestell made in the 1940s looking at Earth lighting up the night side of the Moon. That work was among the best lighting portrayals he ever did, but his assumptions of the fine details and vertical relief were left behind as knowledge of the Moon matured and became widely known. This painting, air brush and hand brushed acrylics on illustration board, portrays the cratered highlands of the Southern Polar regions. Left of center can be seen the prominent Malapert Mountain catching the sunlight. All the features are portrayed with fidelity to the subject matter. Earth, looming above the distant limb, or edge, shines with about 80 times the brightness of Moonlight at the same phase. The Moon as seen from Earth would be 'New' or almost all in shadow except for a very thin crescent. The Earthlight doesn't quite reach the Sunlit areas, leaving a zone of darkness within the depressions at both 'terminators' or edge of the illuminated portions from either light source. This also, not co incidentally, marked the strip of the Southern polar Moon for a time known as 'Luna Incognita', which was still in its greatest depths unknown when this was painted. An Apollo Astronaut (relayed to me by the fellow who bought this painting at a Spacefest,) stated this was the most accurate portrayal he had seen of the Moon from orbit. Novaspace used to sell this as an art print. #SciArt

The Flaming Star Nebula's vibrant red hues are due to the ionized hydrogen gas emitting light, while the blue areas result from light reflected by interstellar dust.

The Flaming Star Nebula is a stunning emission and reflection nebula located in the constellation Auriga. Its vibrant red hues are due to the ionized hydrogen gas emitting light, while the blue areas result from light reflected by interstellar dust. It is associated with the star AE Aurigae, which energizes the surrounding gas and dust.
