Really interesting thread.

We also wish there was as much interest in this type of EV & how we can get it to happen in Newcastle.

Bradford is a really interesting city & it’s great to see its renaissance. There are clearly lessons for our Newcastle here on how we can do better. We are clearly being left behind by West Yorks as Leeds is also racing ahead - this is the Leeds equivalent of CollingwoodSt & GraingerSt.

Do you know much freight does actually cross the Pennines by rail? And where the facilities are for transferring freight between rail & road. This really needs to discussed more given the immense amount of freight just one locomotive can haul.

It’s good to see @chroniclelive.co.uk reporting this as the Climate Change Forum talk was v interesting. When we saw this map of the burns we realised just why the Exi Park subway floods. Politicians talk a lot for/against climate change stuff so people need to understand what is happening locally.

This is excellent news but we also need more frequent rail services to Newcastle from south of the Tyne & the reopening of lost stations. The Gateshead flyover situation really shows why this is important - it would have been easier to deal with if Gateshead still had its access to the railway.

10) Finally when reviewing the current plans, it should be remembered that Newcastle Council have a target of 50% of local journeys being walked/cycled by 2030. To do this they need safe streets for walking & a dense network of cycle routes engineered to LTN1/20 standards.

Our suggestions:
c)The Council to take a wider view on destinations. At present they only consider Gosforth Shopping Centre on their mapping. There are many more destinations (see pic)
d)ChristonRd cycle lane to be extended to ArchRuncie1stSchool & RydalRd - with filter to BeaumontTer to go south

2) It’s also really striking that @luketryl.bsky.social complains about the absence of voices in this tweet-but is doing the same thing in this poll. Did he ask those who can’t afford a car if they can afford this? Or just rich, privileged drivers who are predjuced against a safer form of polluting.

Fantastic to see so many people enjoying yesterday’s parade.

The rubbish left behind less so.

Thanks to all the Council staff & contractors working hard to clear up the Town Moor & Exhibition Park.

The debate around 20mph needs to focus on the probability of being killed/injured at different speeds. We 1st blogged about this 10 years ago- since then the central part of of GosforthHighSt is now 20mph, but this could be extended to cover routes to school.

Newcastle’s Public Health Director’s report focuses on children. The foreword tells of her Newcastle childhood: the references to playing out& travelling independently are striking- but (unless you live in a cul-de-sac (AKA a LTN)) that’s a lot harder to do today

There are terraces like that in/around Gosforth- they’re lovely. As are all the LTNs/cul-de-sacs. Some streets border on parks/greens. But if you don’t live on a street like that, the a child’s ability to play/walk to school etc is restricted by cars.

We can dream -electric power & metal wheels would be very helpful re Newcastle’s air pollution problem & it’s a shame that trams were got rid of.

As for Calvert Branding - we have it & it’s much loved so why wouldn’t you want to use it? It fits really well with the Mayor’s focus on women’s safety.

One of our members had to switch due to the Tyne Bridge works - they found that the alternative cycle route over the Tyne meant that the commute was like “being on holiday”.

This is why we are so worried about the Council’s ability to meet its own transport targets - 2030 is only 5 years away yet we keep seeing projects changed / cancelled.

Bolt on kerbs are a good thing - but there has to be a quicker way to get them installed on existing routes.

According to the Chief Medical Officer’s Report 2024, 37% of households in Newcastle have no access to a car.

Our final holiday walk is a #Gosforth one: Castle Farm Bridge to Freeman Road. Between 2 main roads lies woodland and the Ouseburn and it’s cliffs.
January 5, 2025 at 10:45 PM
For New Year’s day, our #Newcastle holiday walk pics are the back door to the best viewpoint in the city: a short wooded path from Grandstand Rd to the top of Cow Hill.

1/ #Gosforth holiday walk today: from the medieval Salters Bridge via the “bridleway” through woods & farmland to Melton Park & and its ruined chapel.

This makes a lovely outing from home - but it’s also a practical route as it links several housing estates & schools.

Today’s holiday walk in #Newcastle is over the Town Moor from #Gosforth to #Kenton.

The moor feels endless here - but walking this way feels faster than through the streets.
December 28, 2024 at 9:54 PM
Today’s holiday walking route is in Jesmond: the path through the allotments that links Highbury & the Little Moor.
December 27, 2024 at 9:56 PM
For Boxing Day, our walk is over the Town Moor from the edge of Gosforth to the best view point in the city.

Cow Hill is a great place to realise how driving skews your perceptions as you can see many local landmarks (just not always where you expect them to be).

We won’t be posting tomorrow so wishing all of our friends & followers a Merry Christmas.
December 24, 2024 at 9:29 PM
Our Christmas Eve city walk picture is the path from St Mary’s Chapel to Osborne Road in Jesmond. In between our city’s streets lies this wooded walk past St Mary’s Well.

For our second day of Christmas walk pics in #Newcastle, here is Duke’s Moor at #Gosforth’s southern border.

Sheltered by garden gates to the north & avenues of trees to the south and east, the latest addition to Duke’s Moor is a plantation of saplings.
