Linux user, Marine Corps, Peace Corps, would be World Traveler, Photography, Fishing, Chess. I miss my Moto Guzzi. My apologies in advance if I inadvertently offend. If I don't reply, I am not ignoring you, I am simply giving you the last word.
I went to a meeting with two other people. We all pulled out fountain pens. We talked fountain pens for about 20 minutes before getting on to what the meeting was originally about.

I use a fountain pen.

Here is an image for those that don't know what a fountain pen is.

And then you will be able to complain how bad Linux is.

Well, back in the day I used a manual typewriter!

But I would like to reinforce my Linux creds with my Windows/Mac colleagues, and learn a new Linux trick.

I forgot to mention, I am interested in wireless casting, not Chromecast or an HDMI cable.

Someone was grousing, I think yesterday on bsky, about Zorin seeking payment for open source software in their two non-free option. That is the only reason I was made aware of Zorin's tiers.
November 9, 2025 at 9:13 PM
I wonder if the author installed Zorin Core (free) or Zorin Pro ($$) or I believe there is a 3rd tier ($$$), but I don't recall the name.

And I prefer grape-nuts.

I don't generally drink German wines, so I had to type kerner into my browser to learn that it is a German white wine grape. Prana, which is linked to breatharian, is accessible the same way.

I don't understand.
November 8, 2025 at 9:33 PM
Me thinkst most distros and all mainstream distros come with a GUI, and the option to use the command line at will.
November 8, 2025 at 9:28 PM
Real Linux fan-folks are breatharians! T'is amazing what you can do with a little prana!

No LibreOffice, or OpenOffice before that?

Spouse had a fairly new HP laptop and the keyboard acted up as you describe (Win 10). Plugged in an external keyboard and it worked fine, laptop keyboard nope. It sat unused for several months. Started it and installed updates. The keyboard works. Driver issues? Don't know. We'll see how it goes.

I'm from the school of "Whatever Works for You". The 'Linux Gurus' that I know (through long-term participation in a LUG) they use Linux where that works, and they use Windows where that works - often as part of their day jobs which usually involve both Linux and Windows.

You touch on a broader and very correct issue. Linux has lots of adherants that are willing to assist, but one can be easily mislead, especially by those with the loudest voices (but limited experience).

Lots of free 'how to use Linux' resources on the Internet. There is an outfit humblebumble.com that has offered digital copies of reference books on Linux, etc, but their offerings change. Check out your local library and see what they have to loan out. Don't forget interlibrary loan.

A couple of the Linux distros that I use basically say the same thing, when firing up sudo or su.

you can stay with the old repositories'. So I don't plan to use Ubuntu ever again, as long as there are viable options.

There are distros that people rave about that don't interest me, but it depends on what is available.
November 7, 2025 at 6:38 PM
Never is a mighty long time. I stopped using Ubuntu after their edict that 'thou shalt use Unity'. And then recently (as I understand it) Ubuntu pushed a change in the available repository options, making the changes pretty much obligatory rather than 'here you go, we now have this new option, or

A friend who helps new and low-knowledge tech users (hardware & software) told me that he will only install Mint or MX Linux for new users. Far as I'm concerned people can whatever they think they are capable of. Too man new users complain about Linux when gentoo or xyz trips them up.
November 7, 2025 at 5:14 PM
I dual booted Mint and Win 11 a couple of days ago, easy. You can set up a Ventoy USB and run Mint and other distros as a liveusb. Some distros appear to only install, but Mint plays nice.

For the larger community - when considering a new program (xyz), it may be worth your while to search for "best alternatives to xyz 2025" before buying commercial software, or worse yet signing up for a recurring subscription to use something.

You forgot c:\ d:\ , etc versus / /home /boot /home/usrname /home/something/something etc.

and a similarity (there are many), while Windows is not open source, there are lots of open source / free programs available for Windows, and a subset that will run on both Windows, Linux
