Trust profiles: In line with previous studies, there is a consistent association between distrusting medical experts and the government and CT beliefs. However, Romania and Hungary are exceptions: the level of trust in institutions has no association in those countries.

Sociodemographics: Surprisingly, individuals with a medium level of education endorse CTs more than people with low education across most countries. CT beliefs are more prevalent among younger age groups (under 30) and women (in 7 countries;. particularly, in the UK and Poland)

Informational profiles: Frequent social media use for news is generally associated with higher CT beliefs. YouTube is strongly linked to CT beliefs in many countries, whereas Twitter shows the opposite trend. In some countries, WhatsApp users tend to endorse more CTs than non-users.

We used an original survey covering 16 European countries and Israel and observed great country variation: a greater propensity to believe conspiracy theories in new democracies (e.g., Romania) while Northern European countries (e.g., Sweden) and Austria believe fewer conspiracy theories on average.
