While Adam of Bremen mentioned that there were human sacrifices (and this was likely exaggerated in order to antagonise Germanic cultures) archeological finds confirm that human sacrifices occurred to some extent in pre-Christian Germanic culture.

There are still debates around the topic.

During blót it was common to sacrifice animals but there were bones found in certain areas that could indicate something like human sacrifices. Most of the times criminals or slaves were offered as sacrifices (which could also be seen as execution).

Blót (Swedish: blot) generally was a ritualistic practise, a transaction. It was a gesture of respect or request for better times and positive outcome.

During Fasonatten, rituals are quite common (e.g. at the ritual site of lake Teckoman, south west of Sternvatten). These rituals are similar to blót and álfablót (álfablót is commonly claimed to be the equivalent of Halloween) during the viking age.
