They really tell on themselves and their cooking skills when they say that. The reason their chicken tastes like that is a pickle brine. It is really easy to replicate at home.

There are lots of people across all generations that refuse to boycott them because "they have good chicken". When I lived in the South, there were plenty of gay people that would eat them and would act almost defiant about it, like they weren't letting politics get in the way of their life.
