Am I willing to be with another in the magnitude of their sadness, anger, pain, frustration, or fear—without the benevolent contempt of trying to immediately solve, fix, or help? What are my capacity & skill for empathy? Am I as able as I am willing?

Am I willing to be with another in the magnitude of their sadness, anger, pain, frustration, or fear—without the benevolent contempt of trying to immediately solve, fix, or help? What are my capacity & skill for empathy? Am I as able as I am willing? Big feelings are not problems to be solved. They are information for the person feeling them. When someone decides to feel in my presence, they offer me the gift of revealing their wholeness as they receive important messages from, for, and about themselves. And I may have feelings about someone else’s feelings. I don’t like to see people hurting. Sometimes I get uncomfortable. Sometimes I judge. Almost always I want the people I love to be happy and at peace. Sometimes I feel impatient and want to interrupt suffering. Is my interruption rooted in regard for the other’s sovereignty? Is my emotional intrusion an attempt to manage my own discomfort? Is it a move toward cultivating their emotional dependence on me?
