I review De La Soul's wonderful CABIN IN THE SKY, as vibrant, buoyant, and thoughtful as any they've released. A lovely year-end surprise. humanizingthevacuum.wordpress.com/2025/12/04/p...
People go through pain and still don’t gain: De La Soul’s ‘Cabin in the Sky’

Happy birthday to Sean Carter. The Kids don't mention him much: he's as much a statue in the park to them as his beloved Frank Sinatra was in my teens. Here are his best albums (hint: RD and The Blueprint do not top my list). humanizingthevacuum.wordpress.com/2019/01/28/r...
Ranking Jay-Z’s best albums
He kept going after 2003, releasing a 2006 comeback that’s better than I remembered, a soundtrack called American Gangster that I overrated but sounds fine, and more product, some of which, l…

I'm curious as hell to learn how viewers will respond to 'Sirât,’ which, at my most uncharitable, does unfold like calamity porn ("Let's see, who's next on the kill list..."). My review. humanizingthevacuum.wordpress.com/2025/12/03/b...
Busy dying: ‘Sirât’
According to the intensity of disagreement and the steady deluge of jokes, no 2025 film has divided my critic cohort than Sirât. Writer-director Oliver Laxe (Mimosas). follows Luis (Sergi López), a…

Thanks. My hope is that, especially while living in South Florida, I never have to share it again.
As he notes, Alfred shares this story every year. It is one of his finest pieces of writing, and the sorrow is always that, in a better world, he would have never needed to write it. We should all be grateful, at least, for this piece in the world we are in.
