Well, this is interesting. Bearing in mind the amount of sewage pumped into the sea last year and the very high ecoli reading in July, it is very clear that this classification lark is entirely unfit for purpose. What are we supposed to do with this new classification? It doesn’t protect anyone..

When it rains like this we know that there will be sewage outflow into the sea. Over this Summer, sewage has flowed into the sea here in Deal for a total of 72hours. Indeed there’s been yet another out flowing of sewage since midnight last night due to the rain. People don’t just swim during the bathing season which finished at the end of September. Do they know there is sewage in the sea? They have to wait 72hours for it to disperse before swimming. We know that not only have Southern water not invested in upgrades to align with changes in the weather that have been predicted due to the climate emergency, they haven’t even kept up with basic maintenance and upgrades to our aging sewer systems. Southern Water still claim they don’t know what caused last year’s very high reading on 23/8/24 of 3900 EColi Colonies per 100ml, but we now realise that the systems that report storm overflow releases happening wasn’t working back then. I made an FOI request earlier this year about this before the bathing season started. Since then the telemetry is working and if you look at Southern Water’s safer rivers and seas website you’ll see a massive gap in the data from 2021-2024 when they weren’t notifying us of sewage overspills. This is very dangerous for those who swim in the sea, swimming in sewage can and does cause life threatening illness of course. Since the reporting has been up and running again, the huge report of 9900 Ecoli colonies in 7/7 this year has been attributed to a southern water sewage outfall by the environment agency. This is now bigger than when we started our campaign. It’s no longer just about the Poor classification of our sea water quality here in Deal, it’s about the incompetence of Southern Water. There’s no amount of government fine that is going to fix this. The government can see that privatisation has failed the people. It’s time to renationalise. Our water and sewage are basic human necessities and should be run for people, not profit.

Walmer Town Council collected a sample of water from the sea near Walmer Castle on the 16th July 2025. This was tested by an independent accredited company, the results for both samples of sea water came back as excellent.
