Neko Case ~ Neon Grey Midnight Green. Decades into her music career, Neko Case is still challenging herself. Neko is happy to be alive and at the height of her creativity. Her evocative lyrics touch on grief and gratitude. #AOTY #AOTY2025

Rosalía ~ Lux. Sounds like absolutely nothing else in music right now. Dense, avant-garde classical pop. A spiritual journey through the lens of female saints and poets. Along with her powerful, versatile vocals, this is a singular work from a visionary artist.

The Weather Station ~ Humanhood. Jazzy soundscapes with acoustic and electronic textures. A search for self and meaning in a chaotic world. Tamara Lindeman's vocals are another instrument, a keystone to this powerful album.

Basia Bulat ~ Basia's Palace. A change in sound with a little less folk, but growing into a lush, dreamy synth-infused pop. Dance tunes and gorgeous ballads.

Ron Sexsmith ~ Hangover Terrace. Another excellent album of well-crafted folk-pop songs. His lyrics are honest, sometimes funny; with beautiful melodies. Memories of childhood reflect my own. Had a cigarette in one hand and a cocktail in the other 🎶

Amy Millan ~ I Went To Find You. Fifteen years on from her last solo album, the Stars and Broken Social Scene member encourages people to slow down. A tender, dreamlike journey through memory, grief and acceptance. A beautiful work of synth-pop.

Florence + the Machine ~ Everybody Scream. Songs of heartbreak, with moments of hope. Rooted in themes of witchcraft and mysticism, with Florence Welch's powerful vocals.

I’ll admit, I let out a little sound of delight when I saw this. New novel from Miriam Toews out in August! 📚 #booksky

1) Beth Gibbons ~ Lives Outgrown. Ten years in the making, first official solo album. A deep, dark, emotional journey about coming-of-middle-age. Her most personal work to date. Nothing like Portishead. A unique, timeless soundscape of chamber folk.

2) Jessica Pratt ~ Here in the Pitch. The retro lo-fi minimalism of her previous albums has been expanded to include drums and synths for the first time. Pratt's unmistakable voice remains the heart. Beautifully, well-crafted folk songs.

3) Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Wild God. The darkness is still present, after all the grief, but rays of light shine through. The songs all feeding off each other. Beauty and hope, a celebration of life.

4) Hurray for the Riff Raff ~ The Past Is Still Alive. Folk-punk stories about America, time on the road with people living on the margins of society. Segarra is a songwriter in a class of their own.

5) Waxahatchee ~ Tigers Blood. From indie-rock to bittersweet Americana tunes. Katie Crutchfield is confident in her new laid-back style.

6) St. Vincent ~ All Born Screaming. Annie Clark self-produced for the first time. A primal scream but not a dark record, but hopeful. Still surprising us 7 albums in.

7) Laura Marling ~ Patterns in Repeat. Shaped by motherhood and domesticity, but not shying away from heavier subject matter. Stripped down and void of drums, with lovely string arrangements. One of the best singer-songwriters out there today.

8) Pearl Jam ~ Dark Matter. Album number 12, and 33 years in, this is the best Pearl Jam album I've heard in ages. All killer, no filler. "Visited by thoughts and not just in the night, that I no longer give a fuck who is wrong and who's right".

9) Jerry Cantrell ~ I Want Blood. This solo album, unlike the countrified tunes on his last solo outing Brighten, sees Jerry bringing back the sludge. These tracks are heavy and catchy.

10) Lhasa de Sela ~ First Recordings. Documents the beginning of unique sound that Lhasa and Yves Desrosiers created for her debut La Llorona. No production here, just Lhasa singing & Yves playing guitar. Jazz standards and Latin songs. Enchanting.
