When I think about politics impacting the consumption of culture and media and how they do so, my mind immediately goes to #China and #Japan (and their responses to Korea's #hallyuwave). In this I will be discussing primarily China as I have just a little more knowledge on that compared to Japan.

Applying contemporary narratives of #appropriation to colonial era.... I personally believe that music should be examined through the lens of the time period itself. Especially since colonial music, while yes, influenced by external sources, still maintained Korean aspects in it's music.

Given the intricate and very recent history of Korea, it is unsurprising that nationalistic expectations are pushed upon celebrities and idols - given that they are a representation of Korea's ideal citizen. #nationalism

First away I noticed the elongation of words, a vibration to the words very much characteristic of #traditional Korean music #aesthetics

People argue that Idols are factory made but I beg to differ. I don't doubt that there is a produced aspect behind idol's personas - they are afterall a representation of neo-liberal expectations, but, especially in the older generations, candid personalities of the idols were/are known to fans.
