Kodaka ruined dr 1&2 with the godawful dr3 anime for me so that's why I like drv3 so much, because it nuke the previous continuity and dr3 with it.

They were obviously following strict guidelines by TPC. Not just the pokemon choices but also it seen like they didn't have much freedom to make the pokemons more stylished according to their own art styles. Also the pokemons poses and the fact they don't seen to interact much with the characters.
