Not everyone gets a warning that they're about to die. My mum did, and spent a considerable proportion of her last three months planning her funeral.

It does close. But not quickly and not completely. My favourite metaphor for grief is that you grow around it. It's still there, you just find ways to accomodate it.

My ex-SIL went to see a medium and was like "YOUR MUM SENT A MESSAGE" and if my mother was going to return from the grave to speak to anyone, it would be to yell at the vicar.

That's a really weird one. I've seen neurasthenia as a euphemism for mental illness after WW1 a LOT but never seen a fictitious syphillis diagnosis!

Considering they stayed in hospital for at least a month post-surgery, fudging the numbers is a bit unlikely. Peterborough had some top tier surgeons and a reputation for trauma management because of the railway!

Ok, so Joseph Lister (who did not like recording surgical mortality rates for some reason) killed around 15% of his patients.
The infirmary killed around 3%

They do now but all of them were formerly two separate crossings with four gates

The crossing keepers would come out and open the gates for vehicles when it was safe but the pedestrians had an unlocked side gate they could let themselves through. Not sure when they started locking the people gate, certainly not before 1881
