Is this really the problem—that #China govt fines for environmental harms are too high?

Good to see these concerns about environmental damage done by fireworks in #Tibet; better still to also see it about mega-dams like #YarlungTsangpo, mines, roads, and other infrastructure projects causing serious harms.

@chrdnet.bsky.social proud 2 team up w @rizwangvl.bsky.social @marylawlorhrds.bsky.social @vdraphael.bsky.social @yalkun.bsky.social to talk about #China govt’s widespread, systematic #humanrights abuses, esp scourge of #arbitrarydetention. Goal: ending impunity. Watch online: youtube.com/@CHRDnet

From a govt in #China that arbitrarily detains #humanrights defenders working on #development, just launched construction on world’s largest dam in #Tibet w/o proper EIAs or consultation, censors its Gini coefficient, and regularly threatens #UN rights system, well—we’ll see how this unfolds.

Amazing to have seen this painting of the great Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama—happy 90th birthday!—at the museum honoring former President Nelson Mandela.

#HongKong, November 2014. Extraordinary protests, asking only for respect for the #humanrights guaranteed—then, now, and always—under international law. Imagine if this remarkably loyal, civic-minded opposition had been embraced! But that spirit lives on through amazing global work.

Thinking today of #China literary critic and 2010 #Nobel peace laureate #LiuXiaobo.

Half a century after the #Chinese govt-supported #KhmerRouge seized power in #Cambodia, unleashing #humanrights horrors on millions, current #China leader #XiJinping visits Phnom Penh and speaks only of “ironclad friendship.”

“In 2024, only 418 individuals were acquitted or found not criminally liable in public prosecution cases, accounting for 0.03% of all criminal cases brought forward by public prosecutors last year, according to data released by the [#China] Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) on Sunday.”

What if any #China govt #humanrights abuses will #NewZealand #WinstonPeters ask Beijing to stop? Will he call out #XiJinping’s #transnationalrepression in 🇳🇿?

If only this wasn’t an effort to distract from #China govt entrenched #authoritarianism, #genocide, #crimesagainsthumanity, persecution of #freespeech #laborrights #religiousfreedom, enthusiasm for #torture #arbitrarydetention #TNR, & of course efforts to weaken #UN #humanrights bodies incl #UNHRC.

Thanks to @rfa for making sure these critical #China #Tibet #Uyghur #HongKong stories are covered. #XiJinping govt’s abuses are vast, and coverage by media is key. Imagine if these stories could be reported and debated domestically…

Interesting: I don’t see reference to this meeting on @harvard.edu website. Just weeks ago #CCP #WangHuning was in the #Uyghur region, extolling his boss’s brutal, genocidal policies.

An interesting #China #domesticviolence statistic (if accurate: “In 2023, police across the country issued 98,000 such notices.” Does that reflect the full number of cases that should have triggered notices? And how many of those 98k notices merited and yielded prosecutions?

China govt once again observes anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights by arguing against universality of human rights.

Note that the “Xinjiang Cotton Association” does not deny the use of forced labor, and it does not offer to allow independent inspectors to carry out human rights due diligence. Enough said.

It’s critical for democracies to hold the line #UN #HRC and #UNGA on #China govt #genocide #crimesagainsthumanity #humanrights violations. But absent investigations, prosecutions, #XiJinping unlikely to change hardline policies.
