Pretty sure that’s been shown not to be true with crops for animal feed directly competing with those intended for human market. I haven’t looked at the figures in a while but a couple of years ago that was found to be the case.
The 97% was taken from these folks - meal not whole bean admittedly.

But, between 30-50% of crops grown are grown to feed to livestock, so emissions would also be reduced there if there was a move away from animal agriculture.
Soy is an interesting case - 97% of US production is used for feeding livestock!
Globally, 40% of arable land is used for making animal feed

Sad news.
The ‘Please Mrs Butler’ book was always my favourite growing up. Loved performing those poems - ‘dog in the playground’ particularly. Still love them now.
