I instinctively want to save him from the mockery & cruelty I endured as a child.

But I probably don't need to. He doesn't need protecting or saving. I did. Perhaps I still do?

But I realize that I was upset about how he was expressing himself, because I spent my entire childhood being brutally physically punished and emotionally abused for being different from other people.

My cringing response is because I fear for him. Because people are (were?) cruel to difference.

He wasn't hurting anyone. He was only (perhaps slightly) annoying a group of adults at an all ages punk rock show at a record store. The band was really cool about it.

But it was really hard to watch, and super "cringe" for me.

OMG, that sounds so good! Coffee and crème brûlée would be a perfect breakfast.
