Ol’ Yellowstone moved east thinking it left the Wallowas buried forever… but the fish and magma bellies had OTHER plans. 😎 🤙 As the crust stretched, giant blocks of rock tilted upward along deep fractures, hauling the old magma chambers and seafloor back toward the sky.

Although politically divided by a man-made border, the Seven Devils in Idaho and the Wallowas emerged from the same ancient volcanic arc - two sides of one drifting oceanic terrain that crashed into the continent. Before white man drew state lines, erosion created the dividing Hells Canyon.

Then, volcanism built the crust that later smashed into the North American Continental Shelf, but even more incredible, the granite peaks we see today are the bellies of ancient magma chambers!

Consider this: the Cascades are mere babies compared to the Wallowas. They first emerged from an ancient island arc nearly 300 million years ago!
