Or perhaps the modifiers in place were never removed, either way scratch couldn’t figure out what was a part of themselves anymore and ended up abstracting. And so Kane no longer lets in PCs into the circus so he can’t make the same mistake again.

Cane then took scratch, thinking he was an NPC, and tried to use him in one of the adventures and applied modifiers to scratch’s mind. Maybe cane realized his mistake and tried to remove the modifiers and ended up erasing some default aspects of scratches personality.—⬇️
