a lot of people in the US don’t have passports— it’s unaffordable to fly long-distance across the US, let alone all the way to another country if you aren’t near the borders. So people here would be unprepared for this change (though I agree you should just always try to have a passport)

growing up, my mom had a saying, “the weak have quick ears”. Her family needed to flee bad conditions in their home country and being monolingual shows you probably never needed to do that. Maybe the braggers heard similar things as children and never re-evaluated them

so frustrating— every time I start collaborating with someone who’s never used ML before I need to spend *months* de-conditioning them from all this misleading stuff they see in the news 😳

also can see it in disney adults, apple stans, people who think one country is better than all others. The people who carry on about AI being amazing and AGI taking over the world are never experts with nuanced views on the subject. Pattern shows up all over the place

AI is a tool like math or statistics, it can be beneficial or not. Environmentally better AI is being developed but now, any model producing images like this uses lots of resources— no reason to not just use a real photo that already exists unless you need something very specific in the image

smh— ML has such a potential to be used for good. Hoping initiatives in other places like EU will continue research on that track, though we may see it in practice less for those in the us

yes and it’s been spreading offline too— some people at nasa I work with have started getting random calls on their work phones from academia haters leaving threats and profanities. Scary times
