We almost face a different and yet entirely identical problem today in that people are far more informed (in that they have greater access to information), but equally uninformed as to how to use, critique and apply it - information is meaningless if you don't know what to do with it!

It's dispiriting above all that languages offer so many hard skills and concrete benefits, and yet continue to be regarded (or those who learn them) mainly in terms of the equally important soft skills and cultural benefits for which they are also routinely disparaged 😕

If I was to put a finger on it, I would say it's a combination of a British love of individualism (see also our fetishisation of property ownership) with an equally British cynicism that says they're unnecessary (read: suspect) when passports, driver's licenses etc already exist for ID purposes.

They seem to be banking on the German electorate being so gullible as to believe that the SPD would be capable of organising anything anywhere *near* this convoluted (the words "puss-up" and "brewery" spring to mind)...
