#OTD in 1973, after building gradually, the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS), was formally created. Originally named the National Association of Chicano Social Scientists, it was renamed in 1995 to acknowledge the contributions of Chicanas in the association.

Born #OTD in 1932, Gregory Luna is a civil rights trailblazer who served in the Texas House of Representatives & State Senate from 1985 to 1999, & championed improving education & public school finance. He helped found the Mexican American Legal Defense & Education Fund & served four terms as chair.

🏈 Jim Plunkett (1947- ) won the Heisman in 1970 when he led Stanford to their first Rose Bowl win in over 20 years. He then became the first Latino selected first overall in the NFL draft. He played for the New England Patriots, 49ers, & Raiders, earning two Super Bowl wins!🌹🏆

🏈 Joe Kapp (1938-2023) played for the Washington Redskins, Calgary Stampeders, BC Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Boston Patriots. He is the only quarterback to play in the Super Bowl, Rose Bowl, and the Grey Cup. 🌹

🏈 Tom Flores (1937- ) became the 1st Latino starting quarterback in professional football when he joined the Raiders in 1960. He went on to coach the Raiders & the Seahawks. As a coach, he won 3 Super Bowls with the Raiders & was the 1st Latino head coach to win a Super Bowl. 🏆

🏈 Danny Villanueva (1937-2015) played for the Rams & Cowboys. A placekicker & punter, he was nicknamed "El Kickador" & "El Toe-reador." He transitioned into broadcast news & became a part owner & co-founder of the Spanish International Network (SIN), later renamed Univision. 📺

🏈 Tom Fears (1922-2000), the first Mexican-born player in the NFL, NFL head coach (1967), & member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1970)! Fears began his professional career with the Rams & then coached for several NFL teams, including the New Orleans Saints. Immigrants make American great! 💪🏾
