A happy birthday to one Alan Moore. He is not merely an amazing comic book writer. He is one of the great imaginative forces of our time and one of the few modern writers I can say are possessed by genius. Hopefully he will stick around to give us more amazing stories.

She Rides Shotgun is good. Reminds me of Ellroy at his best. Never thought I’d feel bad for a stuffed bear. @jordanharper.bsky.social is someone I’ll be keeping my eye on.

This book feels like a vicious assault.

While Razorblade Tears is still my favorite of @blacktopkid.bsky.social’s books, ATSB is easily his most accomplished and thematically resonant book to date. Probably his angriest and political too.

High recommend from me.

Random Recommendations: Since the new movie’s coming out, I’d feel remiss not recommending Jonathan Hickman’s Fantastic Four run. It’s easily the best modern Fantastic Four run and while I can’t say it’s the most definitive, Hickman pushes Marvel’s First Family to new heights. Top rate storytelling.

Gotta love Amazon’s quick delivery. I nabbed these in the mail today. @annasmithspark.bsky.social

Random Recommendation: I know Silence of The Lambs gets all the love, but for me I still prefer Red Dragon. The language is sharp, the psychology compelling, the cat and mouse game propulsive. I agree with @blacktopkid.bsky.social that I wish we had gotten more of Will Graham.

Random Recommendation: Since the new Thunderbolts movie has The Sentry as one of the main characters, I thought it would go well to recommend Paul Jenkins' original miniseries. While it owes a significant debt to Alan Moore's Miracleman, it's no mere imitator. Give it a look.

Random Valentine’s Day Recommendation: I don’t use this term often: Blankets is one of the most moving comics I’ve ever read, perhaps even one of the most moving stories in general. Easily the best love story in comics that isn’t Marko and Alana from Saga.

Another brilliant collaboration between the great Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (God rest ‘im). A deeply human look into the Man of Steel. Also easily some of Sale’s best work, complimented by colors from Bjarne Hanson.

Also Sam’s Story is very moving too.

I never thought I’d see these words used together. Much less see @stephenking.bsky.social say that he does this all the time.

A happy birthday to a master. Not only of the sword & sorcery subgenre but of fantasy in general: Robert E. Howard.

His impact is as large as Tolkien’s, even if many people don’t know him by name as they do Tolkien. They should.

I see why so many consider Essex County to be among @jefflemire171.bsky.social’s best. Some truly masterful stuff, Lemire’s in top form.

The Year of Lemire starts with a bang!

First big read of the #YearofLemire is Essex County! I can’t wait! @jefflemire171.bsky.social

I see people bash Alan Moore sometimes and it hurts me, it really hurts me. How can you not read these pages and acknowledge the genius of Moore and brilliant artist of Watchmen Dave Gibbons?

Christmas Random Recommendation: Nothing really says Christmas like murder, deeply flawed, conflicted protagonists, and an epic sprawling storyline that doesn't quite wrap up everything in the end, but is still somehow satisfying. LA Confidential is the Demon Dog at his best. Movie's pretty good too

Random Recommendations: Power of The Dog is at once an Ellroyian exploration into the Drug War, a McCarthy-esque odyssey of violence, with the depth of social commentary that can be found in The Wire. Winslow joins Ellroy and Lehane as one of noir’s great modern talents.
