With this, it looks like the winning artists from 1989-1992 will all be in the 1988 tournament.

I’ve yet to find the casino that takes bets on niche BlueSky music tournaments, so unfortunately haven’t figured out how to monetize this, but getting to pick an album is always fun!

Looks like I’ll need to listen to a lot of 2001 albums in the next month…

Thanks for another great tournament, Kent! And to this wonderful community of passionate music geeks!

Which albums from those years might overtake it for you?

For the record, I voted for Paul’s Boutique. I don’t believe in voting against my favorite for the sake of bracket preservation. And the only other person this outcome gives a path to victory to is @megabrow12.bsky.social who I assume would only vote PB if it was up against an REM record.

Was in Vegas this past weekend, and found out De La Soul were doing a free concert Friday night, so was very happy to see a number of 3 Ft. High cuts (and other classics) live. That said, Paul’s Boutique is my favorite album ever. But my bracket depends on De La winning, so, uh, vote your conscience

Unless I’m misremembering the inclusion of more albums, so far we’ve only polled three (Jagged Little Pill, Be Here Now, Come On Over) of the top selling UK albums by year, and only one made it past Round 1.

Oh ok, the Great Satan is a reference I get, but didn’t know that’s what he was referring to.

Born in the late ‘80s. The only quotation from here that I would know as a 1st Bush era political reference is “thousand points of light,” and that’s from watching SNL reruns on Comedy Central.

Mikabomb, “Bettie Page”
Indochine, “Des fleurs pour Salinger”
The Boomtown Rats, “Me and Howard Hughes”

I think the most ubiquitous (in the U.S. in the 1990s, at least) were Toyota ads. When this came up on the playlist, “Toyota’s Hot! Hot! Hot!” immediately emerged from wherever it had been buried in the recesses of my mind for decades.
Toyota "Hot, Hot, Hot!" Commercial (1991)
From 1991, this is a commercial for Toyota automobiles.
