We see through the series that Samus just likes protecting people, and that drive mostly comes from her history with her adoptive Chozo family whom she lost because she could not protect them. Nintendo is more than likely misogynistic, true. But samus is still a well written femme character.

As a trans woman who found that maternal drive after I transitioned, tossing away a femminine character who has a maternal urge as bad writing is kinda shitty. And to disparage her maternal drive as the only thing she does to show she is a good person is also pretty shitty.

But samus has literally been a motherly character since Metroid 2 on the Gameboy with the baby metroid, shits not new.. And as we see through the rest of the series, she is still very clearly a badass bitch who does shit her way (except other M.) She's a very competent character.
