Made some new friends while outside today — my human friend was kind enough to take pics. Toad friend admiring Harrowhark, and butterfly friend cravin’ dat mineral.

New morale patches for the range bag. If any folks in my social circle would like to learn more about this topic from a chill trans/NB person of color rather than a bunch of toxic macho assholes, HMU; I’m always happy to teach, pass on experience, or help educate.

An old edit of a nedroid.com comic from like… 2009? Seems timely.

Fifth and finally, Watcher from 1000xResist. This is a case where I simply find the character and story fascinating — I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this game, and learning more about this world and the characters within. Highly recommended!

Fourth, 2B from Nier: Automata. The story itself was interesting, and 2B saw a lot of growth over the course of her part in the story. Also another case where it was simply a joy to go through the world with her.

Third, Alucard from Symphony of the Night. He wasn’t particularly well-written or well-acted but as far as metroidvanias go, he was just a joy to play as through Dracula’s castle. Also I love his character design!

Second, Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect series — I just enjoyed these in general, and Shepard is a bad-ass. Femshep all the way! She was really brought to life with her voice acting (Jennifer Hale did a fantastic job)!

Obvious one first, Terra from FF6. I identify with her strongly, and her journey through struggling with her identity and self-loathing, before finally accepting and even embracing her nature as she continues her journey with her found family.

We get to see scenes of each character in the party as they escape, along with their music themes, combined into a single 20+ minute long piece which still fills me emotion when I hear it. It's not all happy, but it's a step in the right direction, and a start towards better things.

Through many struggles, the party eventually rebuilds and is able to confront the villain once again, this time to finish the job. It is a very satisfying finale, to a wonderful game. The final Kefka boss music still gives me chills, to this day. After this, we are treated to a very long ending.

I've heard from a lot of folks that they struggled after the mid-game climax, and found the lack of direction and depressing atmosphere too much to deal with. I feel like that's part of the charm... after losing so much, we feel lost. Finding our direction is the first step in rebuilding.

And, notably, the Bad Guy™ wins! Kefka may not be considered so nuanced these days, but he's a great villain either way, and in a change from the usual -- he ends up winning in the first half of the game. The rest of the game is about recovering, rebuilding, and finally challenging that outcome.

Over time she grows and learns to accept who she is, slogging through doubt and self-hatred before finally reveling in her identity and embracing it, with the help of her friends, and chosen family. Serious feels, lol. So many great moments, across the entire game.

The protagonist (as much as there is any, with a large cast in a character-driven RPG) is a girl named Terra (or Tina). She is an outcast, searching for her identity and her place. This would be her overarching struggle for the majority of the game. For Reasons™, I identify heavily with her.

The very first time I powered on the SNES with this cartridge inserted, I was mesmerized -- and I still am, over thirty years later. From the opening sting, to the slow walk at the start of a new game, this one had its talons in me from the very beginning.

Nostalgic games 10! Hoh boy, for the 10th I wanted to talk a little bit about a game very near and dear to my heart, Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES, as it was originally released -- better known now in various incarnations as Final Fantasy 6. My favorite RPG, and my favorite game of all time.

Nostalgic games 9! While I enjoyed other early-era RPGs more, my first played RPG game was Dragon Warrior on the NES. My intro to it was actually my father sitting me down and showing me how and where to farm gold for him while he was at work — maybe I was the very first hired game gold farmer? ;)
