Brilliant article. It's very crucial to understand that just because the hourly engagement is high doesn't mean it's pathological and debilitating.
Parents are often told to “limit screen time.” But the better question is: What kind of screen time are kids getting?

🎮 Let’s make screen time smarter, not scarier.

Insanity, utter insanity. Physical BRPs were scrapped in favour of online immigration profiles. EUSS is done entirely online. So it's genuinely not insane to think that if everything is online, then a person should apply online.

Diary of an academic: Day 1.

Dear diary,

I noticed something. My enjoyment of work comes from if my statistical tests come out significant. Don't know whether it's good or bad.
March 13, 2025 at 5:07 PM
I think the biggest annoyance with science, or research in general, is that the statistical packages that aren't R (or ggplot specifically) produce such ugly figures that you spend hours in Microsoft Visio making something that isn't an eyesore to look at.

I had the pleasure to present as an Expert Speaker at the @sydhh.bsky.social workshop, where I talked to a group of 18 - 25 year olds with long-term health conditions about using video games as therapy tools using Sea Hero Quest and Autcraft as examples.

Instagram Reels has randomly decided to recommend violent videos to people, myself included. We're talking shootings, gore, surgical procedures, people dying.

Social media needs legal enforcement. This is not good.

Funny how JD Vance attacked European democracies, instead of saying what the American plan is for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Why did he do that? Because they don't have a plan. Not besides giving Putin Ukraine on a plate, ready to serve.

"We're coming for you", except you're not, not unless the actual case-building procedures change. It's insane that in 2025, domestic abuse victims have to, get this, allow themselves to be abused enough to build up a case that's strong enough to go to court with.

Here we go again: Balatro received a PEGI 18 rating for "gambling", whereas games like FIFA all continue receiving PEGI 3 ratings, despite this promoting lootboxes and microtransactions to children.

If this isn't a sign that PEGI needs to change, I don't know what is at this point.

I find it ever so slightly concerning that the BPS membership can cost postgrads at least ~£100 in their first year. Even for those with funding it's expensive, let alone someone who doesn't have funding!

Ugh. I do understand that TfL is barely afloat, but this is getting ridiculous. Working a 9-5 in Zone 1, but living in Zone 5 already costs people £10.20/day in transport. It'll be even more now, closer to £10.70/day.

Social media are dangerous and should be regulated more, but this isn't the way to do it.

Australia has just decided to essentially victim-blame their under-16s, instead of querying and demanding change from the social media companies. Shame. #cyberpsychology

I don't think enough is said about the trauma that haunts and will haunt Ukrainians for years, maybe even decades. It's shocking to read that 19-30 year olds report feeling embarrassed that they have to look for humanitarian help. And we're 2.5 years in.
