It’s always so cool to hit a solar factory floor and see how it all happens. A great day experiencing the 3SUN factory in Catania ☀️ ☀️ ☀️

Keep an eye over on @solarpowereu.bsky.social for some killer footage to come 🎥

Growing efficiency is helping to reduce the overall costs of a typical solar project: solar plant costs have dropped 88% in 15 years.

@bloomberg.com expects costs to drop 27% more from last year to 2035 📉

Less coal 🌑 more sol ☀️

Solar electricity generation overtakes coal for the first time ever in the EU!!

Hi Pam 👋 Good news! There’s lots of work being done to roll out ‘nature-positive’ solar energy projects, going beyond emission reduction into biodiversity augmentation or restoration ☀️

Here’s a model graphic from one of our reports (the full thing here: api.solarpowereurope.org/uploads/Fina...)

The EU #solar sector is having a weird moment right now ☀️

Solar installations grew by 4% in 2024 compared to 2023 - nice, right?

Well, we’ve had years of +40% growth. So 2024 is a slow down of +90%.

Maybe we don’t need panic, but we do need to act. Decision makers MUST boost system flexibility.

‘The sun doesn’t shine at night’ ‘The wind doesn’t always blow’ ‘We need massive non-renewable baseload!’

RES is inherently variable, sure. So the system should be flexible. Base that flexibility on demand response and batteries - we’ll save billions of euro in energy system costs

It's also not really a hypothesis any more. Solar-powered batteries replace a lot of gas in the evening in California 🎉

How much does EU battery storage need to grow by 2030? 🔋

To match the solar roll out, we reckon we need 27 times more battery capacity than we had at the end of 2023.

780 GWh of battery capacity can accommodate 1.2 TW of solar (and help to slash day ahead energy prices by 25% by 2030)

EU solar #inverter factories face hundreds of layoffs 💥

🧠 An inverter is the #solar brain: key to the smart grids of the digital energy era

For Europe's cyber resilience & energy security, we must reinforce the inverter supply chain

California is investing heavily into #energy storage to counter the #solar abundance ‘challenge’

Already Californian batteries erode a big part of #gas dependency in the evening (the light green in the chart) 👇🏻

👏🏻 My favourite solar/land use stat is that golf courses take up more land than solar in the UK

Agrisolar is really just beginning to take off, there’s about 200+ projects in Europe

It’s also important to remember that solar doesn’t need that much land anyway

There’s often lots of roof space to be used on farms too 🚜

Check out the solar greenhouses from Akuo on the left, and the solar farm shed from Amarenco on the right 👇🏻

The greenhouses power about 800 homes & the shed alone powers 30! ☀️

🇫🇷 🍇 A Perpignan solar vineyard powers 6k homes & provides adjustable shade to 17k vines

Domaine de Nidolères has produced wine for 8 generations, but #climatechange scorches & overripens grapes

The shade doubled the wine’s value & reduced water consumption by 20% 🍷

🇳🇱🫐 A Babberich berry farm powers 1k homes & protects 30k plants

Plastic tunnels normally cover fragile berry crops. They’re replaced every 6 years & can be damaged in storms 🚮

Solar panels are sturdier. Farmers sleep better knowing they won’t blow away overnight 🛌

#Solar energy and #agriculture need to compete for land? Not quite! ☀️🌾

#Agrisolar combines the two land-uses, for the benefit of farmers. And it’s taking off across Europe.

Here’s a 🧵on some great examples from across the continent 👇🏻
