The stranger chuckles, as his eyes flick away. "I did not take you for the self-conscious type." Their voice is amused, affectionate. Heat rises in the man's cheeks. "You tease me, Progenitor." "Is it unwelcome?" The reply does not come immediately. "No," the man admits, almost reluctantly. The stranger smiles. "You're honest. I like it." And inexplicably, it warms something in the man. "It would be the first time," he admits, quietly, "that I were honest and not believed aberrant for it." The stranger's fingers find his lips, trace the shape of them, lightly, as if to learn it, impress it upon their memory. "It will not be the last," they say, softly, their gaze drifting down to the man's hands, their hand following suit, to take them in their own.

The man is silent for a while, his eyes fixed on the stranger's, as if comprehending their words. "If it's all the same to you, sir, I would appreciate if you did not call me that," is all he can manage. The stranger inclines their head, slightly. "No? How would you like me to address you, then?" The man hesitates. "If not your birth name, then, a new name?" The stranger suggests, "After all, tonight will be a kind of… rebirth." And they see the way the idea clicks into place behind the man's eyes, see the way his eyes brighten at the notion. They smile. "So, my dear, by what name would you like to be christened in blood?"

They are silent for a long moment, before Lucien speaks again, his words murmured against the warm pulse of his lover's heart. "How do you bear it?" "Bear?" Alexandre laughs. "There's nothing to bear, for me; it simply is. Perhaps it's a state of existence that was forced upon me, but I had never particularly wanted to live or die before it. I just live day by day." "You don't resent it?" "Maybe at the start, when the hunger was harder to control. But now? How could I?" Alexandre presses a kiss to the crown of his head. "It led me to you." Lucien looks up at them. "You really are silver-tongued." But he is smiling. Alexandre smiles, leans in for a kiss. "Only for you."

"Is there something on your mind?" Lucien's fingers pause on their meandering path along Alexandre's face, burnished gold in the candlelight. "How'd you know?" Alexandre smiles, takes their lover's hand in theirs to press a soft kiss to the palm. "I can hear you thinking from here." "You never told me you could hear your progeny's thoughts." A laugh. "I can't. You're being uncharacteristically quiet." Lucien chuckles. "You know me well." "I've had a hundred years to learn you." "Hmm." He is silent for a while, his hands now stroking imaginary flyaways from his lover's face. "Sometimes I think it's a shame." "What is?" "That… we'll always stay the same." He pauses, tussles with the words he wants to say. "Not that that's a bad thing. But we'll never watch each other grow old, you know? The years won't leave their mark on me, not joy, not sorrow, and I— you—" he hesitates. "You won't get to see how the joy you bring me changes me. I'll always be this… thing, piloting the body of a broken boy. If I'd known I would love you, I'd have spent more time with you human." Alexandre smiles, and Lucien watches their iridescent eyes emerge from behind their lids. "You did know. We just didn't have that time. I told you that your letters drew me, but I read your affection behind your words, too." They reach out, tuck a lock of hair behind their lover's ear. "You're not so good at hiding it as you think." Lucien blinks, sulkily. "Good enough to have hidden for twenty years. If you read it from my words, it was because I trusted you." "And it is and always will be my pride and honour to bear that trust." They caress his cheek, and the look in their eyes makes him want to turn away again. "But respectfully, I must disagree on one thing." "Hmm?" "The years have changed you." Gentle fingers smooth away the crease between his eyebrows, trace the shape of his brow, the line of his cheek. "Maybe I'll never see the lines that laughter leaves on your face, or the way the years will show in your hair as it greys, but I look at you, and I see how you stand straighter, how you smile more, and more readily." They smile up at him, like he is something beautiful. "I see how you sleep better over the years, how you've found in this freedom a way to defend yourself against the world, and how, secure in yourself, you've learned to lean on me less begrudgingly." Lucien watches them, his face betraying nothing, but something trembles in his eyes that he cannot quite hide. "Maybe we won't get to grow old, but we have time. Time enough for what we want to scale down in the history of our lives to be scaled down, perhaps. Was that not why you chose to be remade? The soul that Lucien Winter inherited was whole. As was mine, before I was turned, and beyond." Lucien blinks at him, and realises something. "Ah, I'm a fool." His eyes slide from his lover's face, to fix on an imaginary spot on the bedsheet. "I'm sorry," he mumbles, "I didn't mean— you didn't choose this, but I did." Alexandre takes his hand. "No harm," they say, "I enjoy hearing your thoughts." They shift, open their arms to him. "Come here?" And Lucien slides easily into their embrace.

very rough #luoren draft i wrote on the plane last year bc the idea of icy, obsessive lead researcher luocha falling for the youngest member of his team & coughing up flowers over it had me by the throat.
yingxing tilts his head. "you never knew?" luocha shakes his head, still mystified. "you don't want to love me," he says instead. yingxing's eyes narrow. "you think i don't know you?" "i think you don't understand what it entails." yingxing's beautiful lips press into a defiant line. "and i think you underestimate me," he says. luocha sighs. "perhaps i do." "so, knowing this, is it enough incentive for you to tell the person you've driven yourself to near death over, or do you actually enjoy slowly dying for your feelings?" luocha huffs a laugh. "you're really something, aren't you." yingxing looks at him with his dark eyes and says, "that's for you to decide," like it's a challenge.

And something about you adorning someone else’s dream. His eyes flick back to his book, before he can forget himself in the feeling.

we have been wandering for days; around us, the gloaming dims yet again to impenetrable black. look, you whisper suddenly, a warmth at my side, a voice in the dark as it falls. i stare at the pinpricks of light, flickering at the water's edge, outlining the river— the fireflies will lead us home.
