Every time I go to lunch at a Chinese restaurant near me - and I go every Sunday - every other person walking in the door is Uber Eats or DoorDash. And this is a rural area. For most of my lifetime, the only places who delivered at all were just pizza chains. It's goddamn everywhere.

Second European language spoken in the Americas, but who's counting. I still wish my grandparents hadn't put so much effort into not speaking it to my mom and her sisters, to "assimilate."

Religion - lots of conservatism - different groups - not all Latine are Mexican, Cubans have had completely different immigration, Puerto Ricans are citizens - machismo - colorism - how long has a family been here "on the north side of the river," etc.

It's not unlike vaccines, or unions: once we were removed from life without ever having them, people start to think "hey, maybe we don't need these things and they're evil!"

A lot of it isn't, but there's also just absolute laziness and mistakes, and through it, maliciousness happens.

And that is just not time a lot of people want to take, especially enforcement. Add in actual fraud, and them assuming the worst of everyone, and it adds up to this. The systems aren't fallible. They just don't want to put effort into fixing it.
