But as the sun rose I crested the mountain of my self-pity and remembered I was always going to die at the end of this life anyway. What did it really matter if I spent it like this-caring for this boy—as opposed to some other way? I would always be earthbound; he hadn't robbed me of my ability to fly or to live forever. I appreciated nuns now, not the conscripted kind, but modern women who chose it. If you were wise enough to know that this life would consist mostly of letting go of things you wanted, then why not get good at the letting go, rather than the trying to have?

Dying for one's country, which usually one does not choose, assumes a moral grandeur which dying for the Labour Party, the American Medical Association, or perhaps even Amnesty International can not rival, for these are all bodies one can join or leave at easy will. Dying for the revolution also draws its grandeur from the degree to which it is felt to be something fundamentally pure. (If people imagined the proletariat merely as a group in hot pursuit of refrigerators, holidays, or power, how far would they, including members of the proletariat, be willing to die for it?) Ironically enough, it may be that to the extent that Marxist interpretations of history are felt (rather than intellected) as representations of ineluctable necessity, they also acquire an aura of purity and disinterestedness.

this moment has just really stuck with me.
Especially while i’ve been reading what i have recently.
months ago a coworker was talking about his breakup with his gf of like 5 years. They had moved together across the country for her grad school, lived together, got a dog, you know the story yada yada. At that point in time, they were still living together but he was sleeping on the couch. I was offering sympathy as one does, and i said something like, 'i imagine that's very difficult, and emotional. Living together probably lends itself to some drama as well' How they responded is totally alien to me. I was expecting an elision of some sort that still admits the reality of their situation. But he said something like, "i don't have time for those things or drama, we're adults. look at the world as it is." i didn't know what to say in response to that because to me that sounds so... lifeless. To have nothing to mourn nor even allow yourself some form of negativity, just sounds wrong. Truly unnerving to me when there is no atfective response, or rather someone attempts its total repression. Like it's okay to be mortal, friend, to allow yourself woundability. There's really no rush to get back up.

so The Agony of Eros isn’t usually the type of work I really enjoy, it’s like “catalogue” philosophy, but ya know sometimes, it’s like fine. It’s fine to have a catalogue.
Although Levinas does not glimpse the erotic abysses that find expression as excess and madness, his ethics of eros points unambiguously to the negativity of the Other: sacrosanct, atopic otherness, which, in today's increasingly narcissistic society, is vanishing. Moreover, Levinas's ethics of eros can be reformulated as resistance to the economic reification of the Other. Otherness is not consumable differ-ence. Capitalism is eliminating otherness wholesale in order to subordinate everything to consumption. Eros, however, represents an asymmetrical relationship to the Other. As such, it interrupts the exchange rate. Otherness admits no bookkeeping. It does not appear in the balance of debt and credit.

The more innocent I sound, the more enraged and invested I am. In personal life, people have absolute power over each other, whereas in professional life, beyond the terms of the contract, people have authority, the power to make one another comply in ways which may be perceived as legitimate or illegitimate. In personal life, regardless of any covenant, one party may initiate a unilateral and fundamental change in the terms of relating without renegotiating them, and further, refusing even to acknowledge the change. Imagine how a beloved child or dog would respond, if the Lover turned away. There is no democracy in any love relation: only mercy. To be at someone's mercy is dialectical damage: they may be merciful and they may be merciless. Yet each party, woman, man, the child in each, and their child, is absolute power as well as absolute vulnerability. You may be less powerful than the whole world, but you are always more powerful than yourself. Love in the submission of power.

You were crying too, smiling and crying in a way that made me even more hysterical. You said I could have anything I wanted, but I just couldn't say it out loud. Actually, you said Love, for you, is larger than the usual romantic love. It's like a religion. It's terrifying. No one will ever want to sleep with you. Okay, if you're so great, you do it— here's the pencil, make it work ... If the window is on your right, you are in your own bed. If the window is over your heart, and it is painted shut, then we are breathing river water. Build me a city and call it Jerusalem. Build me another and call it Jerusalem. We have come back from Jerusalem where we found not what we sought, so do it over, give me another version, a different room, another hallway, the kitchen painted over and over, another bowl of soup. The entire history of human desire takes about seventy minutes to tell. Unfortunately, we don't have that kind of time.

I used to try and keep certain things with my at all times, one of those things was a book of poetry. I loved Crush so much.

This is from the poem, Litany in Which Certain Things Are Crossed Out
Love always wakes the dragon and suddenly flames everywhere. I can tell already you think I'm the dragon, that would be so like me, but I'm not. I'm not the dragon. I'm not the princess either. Who am I? I'm just a writer. I write things down. I walk through your dreams and invent the future. Sure, I sink the boat of love, but that comes later. And yes, I swallow glass, but that comes later. And the part where I push you flush against the wall and every part of your body rubs against the bricks, shut up I'm getting to it. For a while I thought I was the dragon. I guess I can tell you that now. And, for a while, I thought I was the princess, cotton candy pink, sitting there in my room, in the tower of the castle, young and beautiful and in love and waiting for you with confidence but the princess looks into her mirror and only sees the princess, while I'm out here, slogging through the mud, breathing fire, and getting stabbed to death. Okay, so I'm the dragon. Big deal. You still get to be the hero. You get magic gloves! A fish that talks! You get eyes like flashlights! What more do you want?
