omg yes i hate this bc the meat companies can't make a profit bc raising meat is so inefficient, so they have to be propped up by the government. Like what happened to the free market? I thought we were all for the free market? Ig we are until the ruling class gets more rich without it.

I agree that the most impactful change would be systemic but that doesn't mean individual action doesn't reduce stuffering.

2/2 This works even if a sell 100k cups bc if one customer stops buying now I still buy 1 less lemon. (The lemons are the animals and the lemonade is the meat, each person that buys less meat the meat companies kill less aminals bc they don't want to waste money raising animals that they cant sell)

1/2 I think of it like how any business works. If I have a lemonade stand and i've sold 15 cups of lemonade the last couple of days i'm only going to buy 15 lemons, if one of my customers stops buying then i know only sell 14 a day and wont buy as many lemons for tomorrow.

2/2 I think in the wild animals kill each other because that's what they need to do to survive, we don't need to do that

1/2 The difference between us and other animals is our brainpower. We have the ability to realise that our prey is sentient. That mixed in with the fact that we don't need meat to survive, gives us the ability that no other animal has; to choose to not hunt.

2/2 All i say is that it's unethical, but that doesn't mean you *have* to give up meat, only that it's more moral to do so. I don't think cultural changes morality though, like we can't say for example, human sacrifice is moral, just because some cultures do it. It's still bad.

1/2 Humans can survive on vegan diets and be plenty healthy, just bc it provided nutrients in the past doesn't mean it has to in the future. If you don't want to give up meat that's totally okay! Less meat is still great! Every burger you don't buy is one less cow killed (or portion of a cow).

but we try to reduce the suffering as much as we can. I agree we'll never get to 0 suffering under capitalism but less suffering is better right? Like meat companies only breed as many animals as they're going to sell. If I buy less meat they breed less animals for slaughter therefore less suffering

sorry never answered the main question 🤦‍♀️. We can't recognize what we can't recognize, and we have to go by what we do, otherwise i could say, "How do you know a brick isn't sentient? it could be in some way we don't recognize". Basically it's an appeal to ignorance.

2/2 to the point of sentience existing in non-animal life, you're correct that it can exist but we have no proof of it existing. We have to go by the proof we have, current science says fungi aren't sentient.

1/2 i'm not a scientist so idk for sure that all animals are sentient but i'd think we agree dogs are, and pigs are extremely similar to dogs only we don't keep them as pets as often. Pigs, Cows, chickens, and fish(which comprise like 90% of meat we eat) can experience fear, grief and other emotions

alive ≠ sentient, plants aren't sentient, animals are
