We found a U-shaped relation between infants' attention levels and the quality of maternal caregiving: both very low and very high attention scores were associated with higher-quality caregiving, suggesting that mothers may adapt their behaviors to meet their infants' attentional needs.

We used eye-tracking and Bayesian cognitive modelling to assess several aspects of infant cognitive functioning, and behavioral observation to assess maternal caregiving quality. Then we tested the association between them.
