@mauve interesting, but it doesn't do quadruple clicks at all? just rolls back to 1 on both Firefox and Chromium 🤔.

I've now finally finished my blog post for "July 2026 - Month of #tixl"

Nothing new, just this thread here as a big write-up.

Also, maybe thumbnail preview now works. I think mastodon can't do SVG thumbnails?

Also fixed some html so it doesn't try to automatically download all the videos […]

@TMakarios again that may not be what you believe, but you need some kind of kind of idea of what god's limitations are, if we want to explain this while maintaining that it's actually somehow inspired by supreme goodness. but for me the more plausible explanation is just that the writers just […]

@TMakarios and to be clear, i don't wanna be a knowitall here. maybe if i went back there with some time travelling (and stoning-proof) power armor, i would find it's really hard to convince people and there might be tons of misunderstanding and unintended consequences. but this is me, with […]

@TMakarios (though the fact that many of those genocides probably didn't actually happen seems to make this more awkward.)
January 3, 2026 at 11:59 PM
@TMakarios i don't see a reason to assume that all this is for harm reduction. like it's somehow the best you could have told people in their situation. and people who go that route tend to be very quick to assume the absolute worst of the people getting genocided in the bible. i don't think […]

@TMakarios yeah, i think the writers of those passages did not think of them as universal ideals. they had very little idea of their place in he world or in history. and they might not have believed in moral facts. at least the whole thing would make more sense to me if they believed in some […]

okay, i think it's a codec problem actually. apparetly i can't play H.264 video except in Haruna (not sure what that's about).

meanwhile AV1 is supported by non-Apple browsers for *checks watch* over 6 years. or you know, even Apple supports WebM since a few years.

but why should the all hip […]

i thought it might have been a cross-server thing, but they don't play from the original server, either.

i don't think my setup is super unusual. i'm on Firefox with fairly "strict" privacy policies, and i got EME disabled, because duh.

freedom is not divisible, not along national borders or otherwise, and we we cannot shield ourselves from from trumpism by blindly embracing everything "european".

ideas of national sovereignty and segregation is what made trumpism happen to begin with.

pushing back against this means […]

oh and also, if you really want to stir up even more nationalist filth by telling people to "buy european", you actively distract from the value of user autonomy in favour of the value of being "european".
January 3, 2026 at 5:46 PM
what underlies this sort of faith in european states is probably largely "lesser evil" thinking, which seemed to have gotten bolstered a lot by the success of trumpism.

i think this ignores that a big part of what keeps states somewhat at bay is foreign competition. the usa becoming yet another […]

oh and also the whole #digitalsovereignty narrative often tries to spin european states as some sort of beacon of liberality, which is obviously absurd.

european legislators are tirelessly pushing for states to spy on their subjects and break into their machines and communication. what […]

many free software seem to imitate corporate software, including the ones that integrate into power structures. most obviously the assumption that the user us some kind of guest on the machine they are using, and there is some super user who is supposed to "really be in charge". #adminarchy

i also think the degree to which mainstream free software projects uphold user autonomy tends to be exaggerated.

if common distribution had a strong emphasis on user autonomy, they would have a strong priority to enabling encrypted p2p communication and file sharing, for example.
January 3, 2026 at 3:19 PM
it's probably unavoidable that the state derives some value from free software projects. and if they can recieve some funding or patches though state agencies, that might still be worthwhile. we're all in the tax threadmill to some extent and we should try to make the best of it.

but we […]

the treat of bad software made or influenced by the russian, chinese or usanian state is exactly the threat of them exercising sovereignty over us. they pose the same threat to their subjects, with the same lack of legitimacy.

what we need is software that is as independent as possible to any […]

second, yeah it would be nice if the money (and thus time and ressources) robbed though taxes would be spent on somewhat socially beneficial causes. requiring that state-funded software is public domain, would be less of a waste of ressources.

it's also essential for any sort of […]
