Pozole (then called tlacatlaolli) used to be cooked with human flesh as part of a ritual offering by the elites of the Mexicas (aka Aztecs) to Xipe Tótec (god of fertility, maíz, and war). Like in other cultures that had human sacrifices, it was a great honour to be the one sacrificed
