This is maybe more of a poke in the eye for the EU - an institution that has survived much turmoil whereas the UK has been shown to have poked its own eye out with the gun it was using to shoot itself in the foot.

I hope you're right. Von der Leyen was congratulating Serbia on their progress toward EU membership so if they were to let Putin's plane overfly as a means of getting to Hungary, that wouldn't be very clever from their perspective.

Sometimes the BBC gets it right. NATO will no doubt look for reasons to brand this incident as a one-off - and russia knows it.

For a story of this magnitude, I wonder why BBC used their digital team to pen this copy rather than, say, Sarah Rainsford or James Waterhouse?
