In 1990, South Korea and Costa Rica had similar social progress scores. Then, their paths diverged. 📈 Costa Rica still performs better than South Korea in terms of inclusion and personal rights.

The United States is one of the least improved countries in the world in social progress since 2011. The 🔴 means that the U.S. underperforms in social progress compared to its peers, demonstrating that other countries are better at transforming their wealth into social progress.

There has been a stagnation of global social progress in almost every region since 2020, driven by the Covid pandemic and a chronic decline in rights and freedoms, according to the Social Progress Index.

Indonesia, China, and South Korea showed the greatest social progress improvement since 1990 when comparing the largest 20 economies.

Conversely, the United States recorded the least improvement. 📉

Mexico is way behind countries like Brazil, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica Uruguay, Chile and Argentina in terms of social progress and quality of life.

If we analyze only developed countries that have full democracies and a high score on social progress (85+ out of 100) we get countries like Australia, Canada, Spain, the UK, Iceland & more.

Interesting to see that the top 10 countries in the world in terms of quality of life, have a proportional voting system. Proportional representation is the most common electoral system in democracies worldwide.

If we analyze the European Union, it performs better in terms of social progress compared to the US, which ranks 31st out of 170 countries on the Social Progress Index. This change happened in 2018.

The UK has been stagnating in social progress since 2018.
