Support from Elon is shorthand for being a stooge or anti progressive (not mutually exclusive), while earning his contempt means not only are you doing something right but also that you are most probably bad ass.

He wanted to buy it to help the Republicans win in 2024 and to control the media, as the Murdoch's and other wealthy people have, to push their rights wing agenda. He ultimately didn't want to buy it because of the cost but when he was forced to he thought he was smart enough to make it profitable.
