Lots of thoughts on this, but I think one of the simplest answers is that if Google didn't eat their baby OpenAI would. Chat GPT was already taking bites. Reminds me of Apple killing the iPod with the iPhone. Apple could have milked the iPod for a few more years, but they knew what was coming.
