At the California Science Center museum and just found some new (to me) #clamfacts . According to Wikipedia this species lives at thousands of meters below the ocean's surface and gets nutrition from bacteria on its gills which can process hydrogen sulfide from deep sea vents.

@potterybyosa OK, I'm not completely sure what part of the rim was intended to reduce splashing but here's the dog bowl. Hoagie was the nickname of the dog.

The San Bruno BART train station seems to have (at some point in the past) declared war on pigeons. The pigeons are winning. (Present but not pictured: lots more pigeons)

Saw some scaffolding in New York and all I could think of is <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:orw2ozs2ujhagv7jp4iv5552" class="hover:underline text-blue-600 dark:text-sky-400 no-card-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-link="bsky-mention">@marklevinenyc.bsky.social @marklevinenyc and his efforts to keep scaffolding from being permascaffolding. Of note: there seems to be some work going on here!

This is a good season to not get sick of #bloomscrolling ! Today I went to San Bruno Mountain, my local biodiversity hotspot, and saw a cute little mustard which turned out to be Barbarea orthoceras, native and new to me, as well as red elderberry and California poppy.

I was let off at the new #sfmta #sfmuni light rail platform near Balboa Park station today which is not news. That has happened on and off for months. But now there are some signs about a grand opening. Apparently what makes this platform open for business is that it has a light now.

Finally got a photo which (mostly) shows the light rail stop which was removed and the one which replaces it. The platform in the foreground is removed (no longer a stop,). The arrowed sign in the distance (next to the car with the taillights lit) is where the new platform is.

Here's a photo of the stop which is being removed. I actually could see both this and a corner of the new platform standing where I took this photo, but it would take a very different camera angle to try to get both in the same photo.

Just saw two trains right behind each other. First one used the platform (even though the cones are still there). The second one didn't. It really seems to be up to what that particular driver does.

Definitely looking like the use of the platform a few weeks ago was an anomaly/mistake, as this morning I was let off using the non-platform method.

No news on the boarding platform itself but the marked crosswalks at the adjacent intersection have just been restriped.

Union Station in Los Angeles is eerily similar to Diridon Station in San Jose (in terms of the ramps leading down from a somewhat narrow platform, although I guess the San Jose platform is narrower). Are they from the same time period? (Fact checking myself […]

Pedestrian infrastructure in Los Angeles. The bad news: the sidewalk ends well short of the stoplight where it would be possible to cross the busy street. The good news: there is a use trail through the rosemary.

The plot thickens! This morning my train was back to the old school drop-off where the train partly turns into the rail yard (thus blocking car traffic) while people get off and proceed to various official or informal crosswalks. You never quite know what you'll […]

Here's the train stopped at the last station. You can see people walking to the marked crosswalk at the front of the platform. After the people are off and the intersection is clear, the train will pull forward and into a train yard on the right (slightly out of […]

Today at our favorite light rail boarding island the cones are back and there is some paint on the curb.
August 8, 2024 at 3:55 PM
Boarding platform update, there is now a sign directing traffic around the island and some new paint. Not in use yet but I don't really know exactly what is planned.

Update on the last M Ocean View stop (near Balboa Park BART): the cones were gone this morning. Is this the next step to further activity? Those who voted "within a week" at https://sfba.social/@soaproot/112802649740366384 have already lost but there's a week […]

How quick is quick build? Specifically, this platform was built a week or two ago as part of https://www.sfmta.com/projects/m-ocean-view-transit-and-safety-project . When do you predict it will enter service? (Poll in the 🧵)
