I think part of the problem is that for forty years people have been told to prepare themselves for the end of Social Security even tho it hasn't been warranted. So a huge part of the population are going to, "Ah, well, nevertheless..." when it happens.

Trump has been talking about tariffs for a long, long time, so it should not be a surprise to anyone that he'd try to use them as a cudgel even against our allies. So yes, this is definitely, in part, what they voted for.

That and cruelty against their foes. Which is us.

I disagree with "ignorant masses, they know not what they do," as if everyone shares values and would agree if only they had good info.
Voters made a choice. Most, at some level, understood what that meant, even if they didn't know many details.
