Narcissus ‘Craigton Clumper’, an Ian Young selection and well named. This is one of several hoop petticoat daffodils in flower at the moment. #fairviewyearround

Ledebouria socialis ‘Tiny’ lives up to its name. An attractive foliage plant for a frost-free greenhouse. #fairviewyearround

The foliage garden this morning. Appreciated so much more in the dark days of winter. #fairviewyearround

Arum concinnatum ‘Agia Varvara’, named by the late Melvyn Jope who kindly gave me this plant back in 2020. #fairviewyearround

Luzula pilosa ‘Igel’, is a lovely cultivar of the hairy wood-rush that forms compact, evergreen hummocks, the name igel means hedgehog in German. I’m bulking up this plant as a ground covering in a new shade border that will be planted next year. #fairviewyearround

Pyrrosia hastata and P.lingua in the alpine house. Not tried outside yet, but seem happy in the unheated alpine house. #fairviewyearround

Cyclamen coum is starting to flower around the garden, such a great value plant. #fairviewyearround

The first winter aconite of the season and it’s not the early cultivar ‘Winterzauber’. Lots of snowdrops popping up too, I wonder if it will be an early season. #fairviewyearround

Narcissus AW2798-3, a lovely, early, dwarf trumpet daffodil raised by Anne Wright. #fairviewyearround

I had thought that last summer’s drought had killed off the bee orchids, Ophrys apifera, growing on the log shed roof, however, at the weekend, I counted 14 healthy rosettes, including this healthy little clump. #fairviewyearround

Narcissus romieuxii ‘Craigton Clanger’ is another early hoop petticoat daffodil that increases well in the bulb tunnel. #fairviewyearround

Incredible to see a few flowers still left on Cyclamen purpuresens, even if a bit battered (in flower since June). To the left are some self-sown seedlings of C.coum. A cross between these two species would be exciting. #fairviewyearround

Actinidia deliciosa ‘Jenny’ fruiting prolifically again this year, sadly the fruits are too small to be much use. #fairviewyearround

Ledebouria socialis is a fascinating little bulb for a frost-free greenhouse, ideal alongside cacti and succulents. #fairviewyearround

Honesty seed heads glistening in the sunshine at the weekend. #fairviewyearround

Cotoneaster microphyllus now covers this wall in the lower garden and acts as a roof to the small arbour. #fairviewyearround

Always one of the first primroses to flower, this is Primula ‘John Fielding’. Some of my primulas have struggled in the last two summers and I lost a couple. When trying to replace them I found that relatively few nurseries now offer a good selection. #fairviewyearround

Galanthus bursanus ‘Alpha Teutonic Helmet’ is still going strong. #fairviewyearround

Nice to see some sunshine this morning. #fairviewyearround

I’ve never found Galanthus cilicicus an easy species to grow. It is not fully hardy here and so needs to be pot grown in the alpine house. This is a green-tipped selection PCl-R-17-4125. #fairviewyearround

I love the soft shield ferns and this one is especially distinct - Polystichum setiferum ‘Ray Smith’. This year I finally managed to propagate it from leaf cuttings, but it seems more difficult and slower than some other varieties. #fairviewyearround
November 28, 2025 at 10:36 PM
Saxifraga fortunei ‘Mt Nachi’, ‘Autumn Tribute’ and ‘Conwy Snow’ still putting on a good show in the alpine house, despite the recent frosts. Outside they would have been mush. #fairviewyearround

Quite a bit of pricking out to do at some point. These cyclamen seedlings are from last years sowings of seed collected from my own plants including C.cyprium, C.graecum, C.confusum, C.mirabile etc. #fairviewyearround
