Often tired, always anti-fascist. Keeping an eye on the local chuds, fascists, and transphobes in Ottawa and abroad.

Here because the other place sucks.

2023 was a challenging year, with a sharp rise in transphobia and the largest homophobic and transphobic public mobilizations that we've seen in years. But I'm heartened by the fact that the far right has faced resistance every step of the way. We've taken more Ws than Ls...

Finally, don't feel bad if you don't do all of these things, we need people in all sorts of roles if we are to push back against the fascist tide.

13. Don't get caught. With any action, think about the risks and rewards. Take whatever precaution you can in order to not yourself in too much trouble. Getting doxxed or getting in legal trouble sucks and can take you out of the fight.

12. Do your readings A lot of valuable information on anti-fascist organizing has been published in recent years. Mark Bray's Anti-fascist Handbook, 40 Ways to Fight Fascists, We Go Where They Go, and others. Learn from others so we can all continuously improve.

Organizations tend to prefer monthly donations for sustainable funding, and if you have the means, you probably won't notice another few bucks on top of your monthly bills.

11. Make a financial contribution If you have the means, consider donating to orgs that do good work, such as the Canadian Anti-Hate Network.

Also consider donating to orgs in your community like Kind Space, Ten Oaks, CCGSD, OCTEVAW, Horizon, etc. as well as ad hoc mutual aid requests.

10. Talk to your kids about online radicalization Pipelines to fascism are everywhere these days, and fascists like to worm their way into online communities to try to promote their vile ideologies and recruit youth. Make sure your kids aren't falling down these pipes.

We're a couple years out from the next school board election, but it's not too early to start preparing. Make sure you have good candidates willing to uphold inclusive education in your community, some far-right candidates got elected last year because no one ran against them

Know the dogwhistles ("parental rights," "indoctrination," etc.) and keep an eye on anyone organizing against inclusive education or comprehensive sex ed.

Presenting themselves as merely concerned parents allows them to gain credibility and support that they are not entitled to, and allows them to more effectively push a transphobic agenda than if they were saying the quiet part out loud.

9. Keep an eye on your school board Right now, the main focus of the far right is homophobia and transphobia. This often manifests itself as targeting queer and trans kids.

Don't keep it all in your head. Make sure that whatever file system you are using, you are keeping track of people, dates, locations, etc. Make things searchable and use tools like hashtags to keep things organized.

8. Organize your files File structures and organization seem boring, but if you aren't archiving and cataloguing, you're not researching, you're just doomscrolling. A mess of unorganized notes and screenshots that you can't find anything in isn't data, it's hoarding.

Make sure you know who the usual suspects are, and who the more secretive, more dangerous neo-Nazis are. The midgard leaks are a good place to start. Follow your local researchers and keep an eye on things.

7. Know your local fascists To fight fascism, it's important to know who we're dealing with. While it's easy to figure out who some of the usual suspects are, not all of them are open books like the Wellington Dipshits.

Also, it's good to balance staring at the content created by the worst people in the world for research purposes with something where you are working with others towards positive change.

They can also be vulnerable to fascist infiltration; we are currently seeing this in the Palestine solidarity movement where fascist grifters are building their followings. An anti-fascist presence in these movements can prevent this.

6. Connect with your community Communities and community organizations -- be they tenants organizations, community associations, progressive groups like, queer or feminist groups, unions, parent groups, etc., can be a counterweight to fascism.

5. Take care of each other Someone told me this year that sayings like "we keep us safe" also applies to each other. In some ways, looking out for each other is fundamental to anti-fascism. Support each other in the rough times and we can build a better world together.

4. Take care of your mental health We all make sacrifices, but you shouldn't sacrifice your mental health to the extent that it stops you from living a happy, full life. Know when you need to take a break and know what your limits are.
