Oh, I can finally do this thing with my latest painting!
I'm still quite slow and clumsy with my Blender blockouts (but I'm getting better!), but even that janky scene on the left made the concept real and gave me what I needed to make it good.

It turns out that this morning's visitors were a flock of blue tits! (photo by @robhainescreative.space)
(the marsh tits had been definitely visiting our feeder prior, as we have photos of them, so we assumed as much until Rob checked his camera this afternoon and saw the colors up close!)

Sure, I could've toned down the orange, but it's so grey and rainy outside that I decided Maximum Orange was necessary.

It was already so red in the reference photo, but I decided to push the surrounding colors way down to really enhance it.

My process from one of the study pages: started w/ a rough color/value blockout, then dabbed in grouped areas of color (I'm not ashamed to say there was lots of color picking from the ref for this part bc learning!), followed by *a lot* of painting.
These studies took a while but I learned so much!

I forgot to post about this! For Plein April, I did a master study of a nature scene from Vanillaware, who I've admired for years. I took a ref from Unicorn Overlord (1st image) and broke it down into 9 tiles so I could work more closely w/ each area (and less overwhelm). The 2nd image is my result:
