Media ranking for 2024 finally all wrapped up. 2025 will definitely have a lot more anime...I hope...

The King of Comedy:

Wow, Todd Phillips really ripped off this film HARD. Anyway, this is a pretty interesting, & somewhat even depressing, character study that brilliantly displays the effects of parasocial relationships. And it's one that has aged all to well, sadly.

Resident Evil 2:

Pretty exceptional game & one that I think is on equal footing with the 2019 remake albeit through its own unique qualities. I like the remakes combat better, but the atmosphere & visual storytelling reign supreme in the original for sure. Also, this box art is unbeatable.

Samael - Ceremony of Opposites

Damn, didn't think that black & groove metal could be such a working combination. Ig when you have an ear for tasty riffs, any combo has potential. Also, the subtle influences from goth & industrial result in an honestly unique overall sound.

Showbread - No, Sir, Nihilism is Not Practical

Kind of a mixed bag for me. On one hand, this has some of the strongest sass tracks I've ever heard (especially the first two tracks). But on the other, there's a lot of pretty boring stuff & the whole LP just felt way too long.

No wrapped for me this year, so here's this ig.

Silent Hill 2 Remake:

I'll definitely make a video on this game, so I won't say anything *too* concrete here. What I will say, however, is that this is definitely a modernized version of Silent Hill 2. Like, this is definitely an SH2 remake developed in the year 2024.

System Shock:

While it is rather confusing & arduous at times, this is still a remarkably impressive title that combines strategic gunplay & item management with rewarding exploration. But the atmosphere & aesthetics here are something you really can't find anywhere else.

Driveyourplowoverthebonesofthedead - Tragedy as Catharsis

Well, this was a nice surprise to stumble upon. A new skramz group slapping you in the face with a fierce debut whose strong metallic sensibilities make them stand out amongst the crowd. Def a group to look forward to. So much potential.

Unruh - Setting Fire to Burning Ships

A hidden gem in the world of 90s metalcore. Hell, I'd argue it's among the top of its class, thanks to the amount of variety presented throughout these 23 minutes backed by one of the most unique vocals & pummeling riffs I've ever heard out of the genre.

Massacre - Killing Time

To think that math rock existed all the way back in 1981 is just insane. Historical context aside, this is such a fun collection of improv instrumentals that captures the sort of chaotic zaniness I want more of in experimental music. SO catchy too, it's kinda nuts tbh.

Seconds:

A remarkable film that brilliantly deconstructs one of humanity's biggest questions; what is it about your life that makes you happy? What factors are there, external or internal, that gives it meaning & satisfaction? Also, the camerawork in this absolutely slaps. So claustrophobic.

New video & first upload since joining Bluesky. A nice & thorough retrospective of Azumanga Daioh, a classic comedy series that's stood the test of time (fairly well).

The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower - Dissertation, Honey:

I'm almost positive this is what Contortions would've sounded like if James Chance were born 25 years later. Anyway, this is a short burst of addicting, chaotic energy that is as unique as it is downright insane.

Traumaside - Force Fed:

Man, this shit riiiiips. Criminally underrated NYDM with a strong hardcore edge to it. It's a pretty brief & straightforward LP that works with simple ideas. But the performances are undeniably hard, with plenty of strong grooves & slams to boot. Also, this cover rules.

Linkin Park - From Zero:

Man, was this album boring. I'm perfectly fine with them continuing without Chester, but what I'm not fine with is the utterly predictable songwriting. It shows the band basically skimming throughout their history but in the most unremarkable way.
