Also in the painting you can see the inscription malo mori quam foedari (“I prefer death to dishonor”).
I still can’t get over the theory that Snake is the result of experiments by a mad scientist, and is essentially a snake

Ermine is considered a symbol of purity. The animal is also present in another painting by da Vinci, which depicts a hunter and an ermine. The animal does not run away from the hunter, because it has resigned itself and preferred to be caught rather than enter the swamp.
