He comes to love pizza and cheesy horror movies at the trailer, asking Eddie to help him open a can of tuna or help tying his shoes. Here, he’s not a pet. A friend, loved. Taken care of and seen for who he is, not what he is. Eddie of course still loves to catch Steve kneading the throw pillows-

It’s nothing fancy, but comfortable. A safe space for Steve to just be. After being taken to his new home, Steve stays quiet for a while, scanning the cluttered but warm space. It’s lived in. Homey. Not like the cold, clinical Institute walls, or the polished, perfected space of his previous home.

When Eddie goes inside, supervised by Institute staff, he connects with the poor guy with hands folded in his lap and a look of shame. His fluffy tail curled around his waist and ears flat. Eddie sees that Steve needs him and he signs the papers immediately, ready to bring Steve home to his trailer.

Anyways, Eddie ends up at the institute, more looking to basically “buy” a hybrid to set them free once safely away from the place. He ends up finding a handsome but closed off, shy, cat hybrid. “Steven Harrington” printed on his info sheet hung up by the door to his room like an adoption pound.

Steve was taken to The Institute after one too many behavioral strikes by his first owner. He was ordered to be “declawed” which in a hybrids case is removing the DIP joint on every finger, leaving their hands disfigured.

In this universe there is a place called The Institute that sort of acts as a pound, jail, ward, or lab for hybrids. Some are bred and raised in The Institute, some are left there or taken there by catchers. They believe hybrids are more animal than human. Anyways it’s not a great place for hybrids.
