It is dichotomous key construction day today in my Plant Adaptations course!

ht to Lynn Clark for creating and publicly sharing these images of a fictional plant family

Bucket list ✅

I got to see a corpse flower in full bloom! It smelled like cooked broccoli to me - not that bad, but my friends thought it was awful. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Totally worth the 2.5 hr wait with friends and really fun to see so many people excited about plants!

GPT prompt: I am designing an experiment where I need to plant plants in a haxagonal design, with each plant having six neighbors with 20 cm distances between plants. Like a honeycomb design. Make me a diagram showing how many plants I can fit into a 2m x 2m area with this spacing.

I hope they consulted with birders because I imagine that any biological discrepancies in the movie are going to cause a riot.

If I ever have to wear an extravagant ball gown, this thistle dress is the vibe I'd go for. Perfection. #Botany

Responses to artificial selection for kernel color in a very multicolored maize population after just one generation!

We selected for white kernels (left) & red kernels (right) in separate fields. The ears in each photo are a random subset of the those produced in each field.

Now THIS was a beautiful, fun, and memorable super social! Absolutely stunning garden and conservatory - worth dealing with the heat. 🥵 What a great way to close out a great conference. #Evol2025

I know I'm biased, but Jill Anderson is a hugely impressive and innovative scientist who contributes a lot to our understanding of plant responses to climate change. #Evol2025

Here, she presents evidence of an elevational gradient in plasticity, from maladaptive (low elev) to adaptive (high elev).

A small victory in the lab: we have successfully observed pollen tubes growing down a pistil in our study organism for the first time!

This involves entirely new methodology for us. We need to work on higher quality images, but in any case, this will help us address our research question. 🥳 🧪 #PUI

#Botany folks, what do you call the "compartments" within a fruit like this that house and separate the seeds? I'm referring to the spaces between the sutures. Is there a term for them? 🌱🧪

One of my new favorite common plant names: Mountain Doghobble

Ridiculous sounding, beautiful flowers. The species is Leucothoe fontanesiana.

Reminds me of diagrams used to describe the arrangement of flowers in inflorescences (flowering stalks).
