I don't understand why Democrats don't have a shadow Bad Cop out there countering each one of these threats with their own. "When a Democrat is elected president in 2028, he will cut the SNAP benefits in all rural areas of Republican states unless they support trans rights." Make Congress think.

You can actually do both!

I wonder to what extent the retailer/customer relationship will transform with this. Seems like there is little political will for anything and companies are already leaning towards just lying about it in the absence of regulation. If they get away with it there will be little incentive to stop.

This is why, again, Democrats need to incorporate this weapon into their rhetoric. Make it known now that the next Dem president will slap arbitrary tariffs on industries Trump cronies operate in. This will give them pause.

"Increasing but at a decreasing rate" - how did that work out for the Biden admin

But maybe if they use a hectoring tone even more, we'll be ok with that.

All the EU has to do is work with US Democrats to get the message out that when a Democratic president is back in office, that individual will immediately impose 500% tariffs on Russia on whatever Witkoff is dealing in, with 300% secondary tariffs.

We all knew this moment was coming and this guy (who is ostensibly smart) was like "no my short term pacification of Trump will work out". Cassidy will continue to be mystified when people in public point and say "that's the guy who confirmed RFK". And now it will be the lede on his obituary.

Churchill was actually plagued by doubt in this regard. The thing that pushed him was his realization that the British people were eager for his rhetoric and they would fight to the death. (Max Hastings, Winston's War)

I'm reading Max Hastings' "Winston's War" and am again reminded how so many moments in history we think of as right vs. wrong no-brainers were actually super slow moving and nuanced and it takes so long for people to understand the gravity of such moments. It's a bummer.

Amen. Hopefully they understand that Trump also faces issues that strengthen their hand - notably, he will no longer be able hit them with tariffs as retribution.

But also, accommodation make you not want to vote for them and you either stay home or vote for somebody else.
November 18, 2025 at 9:23 PM
It's the difference between Us and Them.

(Like with Harvard and Larry Summers - they're like "I don't understand what's the big deal?")
November 18, 2025 at 8:44 PM
To me the indicator of the rot of so much of our leadership/elite class is their total cluelessness with regard to a basic decency which everyone understands. They are like what Larry Summers did something wrong?

Bunin's "The Village"

I used to see one in Canton, Maine, for a few years but then it disappeared. You see VERY occasionally see them on bumper stickers and on random painted signs in yards next to rotting snowmobiles and rusty useless implements of other kinds. You never actually see them in flag form waving.

The Mind of the South, deeply flawed but an important book regardless.
November 17, 2025 at 7:19 PM
It's been like a month for Platner...it cheapens the concept of redemption to frame it as instantaneous. How long did it take you to evolve from being a terrible person? Probably more than a month, right?

(PS - I am not Platner supporter. Election is months away regardless.)

LMAO they have the South Park gnome underpants slide with the arrow/question mark in there.

But there's the other option voiced by Satan:

"Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heav’n."

This is what keeps those men going.

Maybe we can pay the strategists to come up with a new metaphor and we can retire the tent.
November 10, 2025 at 8:43 PM
Or: pols who are willing to fight for people and those who are not.

The shutdown is a catalyzing and clarifying event. It is causing people to make truly categorical decisions that have an air of conclusiveness ("I will never vote for X again"). Haven't seen this before across such a broad group.
