That's an absolutist view. Realistically, the social cost of carbon is probably $100 to 200/tonne so activities with bigger benefits than that are ok. And realistically, there will be climate change so adaptation will be much of the solution

It's not a fast moving emergency like you say and the cost of carbon isnt infinite.

i didn't say CCS was inexpensive (estimated to cost ~$100/tonne). Wind is great but the offshore wind you refer to is also very costly. and as good as wind is, it is not firm capacity.

So youre saying that 1st world voters should be told they should not view the ability to fly see to family over Thanksgiving is merely a petulant ask? Good luck with that.
Offsets ought to work economically- CCS takes carbon emissions from a coal plant and puts them in the ground.

The republicans will never, ever agree to extend those benefits. So a good game theory analysis would be to figure out how to attribute the SNAP and ACA shortfall to them. Again, this is a short term extension only so we’ll be back here in a few weeks

People are upset about the Dem senators agreeing to a short term funding extension but 1 aspect that has not been covered is this is a short term extension only- thru Jan - so the game theory analysis this is a complete cavein seems premature

Tbf, what there is, is a short term extension only, through January. But they got the civil service protections and a vote on the ACA subsidies for that, so they did not give way the store completely

Tbf it’s only a short term extension (thru Jan) so the pressure is not entirely off.

what's the purpose of the fee? Is the goal for there to be some lower fixed # of flight then set the fee to whatever it takes to get ppl to fly less, while accepting whatever emissions happen? Or is the purpose to remediate the damage? Which doesnt happen unless fee proceeds used for DAC etc.

All the land is taken. Looking at the example of the sunbelt cities, they expanded outwards. Their exurbs have been growing at a fast clip. You can't just "build" not to mention NYC has the highest construction costs in the western world

Maybe the proceeds could be used for direct air capture or something... the fact is ppl need to fly

Not yet. But directionally it's not a coincidence that high tax legacy cities are struggling while low tax sunbelt cities have MUCH more population growth. Maybe economic growth. Doesn't take a PhD in economics to figure increasing taxes on affluent ppl means marginally, fewer will stay there

Those low income taxes in states you despise- are good for those economies and their growth. It is not a coincidence ALL the population growth is in the sunbelt while legacy cities stagnate. The handwringing that got Mamdani elected in NYC on promises of higher taxes will be killer for its economy

I get what youre saying but you obviously aren't rich bc you don't understand some things about wealth.
wealth isnt exactly hoarded. But can be used to invest, and create more wealth. In the process, creating opportunities and jobs. Even $ just sitting in bank gets loaned out- spurring growth

Maybe because stopping commerce would be for a genuine national security purpose, but imposing a tariff would be a tax- an unconstitutional delegation of power from Congress, and for a bogus national security pretext besides

the economic analysis is important- as you say, it can vary by lot. Then u have to look at the cost of parking vs the cost of upgrading public transit- that, sadly, is astronomical

I do feel qualified to say there should be thoughtful analysis. And that cities should not be left with insufficient parking if the public transportation can not reliably & conveniently move people. if it takes 90 min on public tx vs 35 min drive w/o traffic and 60 w traffic: parking is needed
