Yesterday we joined the congress celebrating 5 years of Taxonomy Initiative Baden-Württemberg together with @kombiota.bsky.social at @unihohenheim.bsky.social. BW promotes taxonomy in a way that is unique in Germany – and is building a strong network of research, teaching, and knowledge transfer.

From the first plant return to diverse insects, amphibians, marine reptiles and early archosaurs, the exhibition maps ecosystem recovery and innovation. A highlight is Mirasaura grauvogeli from the Grauvogel collection, sharpening early reptile evolution and Triassic timelines.

Yesterday we opened “Triassic Life — Dawn of the age of reptiles” at Museum am Löwentor, Stuttgart. The show tracks life’s rebound after the end Permian mass extinction ~252 million years ago.

New find from the Jurassic Coast: a nearly complete skeleton of a new ichthyosaur, Xiphodracon goldencapensis (~3 m, Pliensbachian). Described by Dr @deanrlomax.bsky.social, Prof Dr Judy Massare, and Dr Erin Maxwell (Natural History Museum Stuttgart).

This week at Museum am Löwentor we launched a model project for urban biodiversity: a 320 m² nature area with 5 mini-habitats, co-created with Wilhelma and local students. Thanks to Wilhelma, Bunte Wiese Stuttgart and the City's environmental education!

The 61st International conference of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Präparationstechnik e.V. took place at the Natural History Museum in Stuttgart from September 16 to 20.

A second fossil, also on display, represents a juvenile Stenopterygius of approximately 1.6 m in length that appears to have been consumed whole and then regurgitated (a so called bromalite).

A specimen in the permanent exhibition of Museum am Löwentor (SMNS) preserves the remains of cephalopod arm hooklets and at least four neonatal Stenopterygius specimens in the stomach region, which are interpreted as prey.

A voracious Early Jurassic predator: In a recent study a team of researchers led by Dr Erin Maxwell reinvestigated the diet of Temnodontosaurus based on fossils from the Posidonienschiefer Formation of Baden-Württemberg.

The new species, named Plesionectes longicollum (“long-necked near-swimmer”), is a previously unknown species of plesiosauroid. The specimen is an almost complete skeleton that even preserves remnants of fossilised soft tissue.
